Diocles of Carystus, A Collection of the Fragments with Translation and Commentary. Volume two : Commentary by Philip J. van der Eijk.
|
Leiden : Brill, 2001. (Studies in Ancient medicine, 23) |
Diocles of Carystus (4th century BCE), also known as "the younger Hippocrates", was one of the most prominent medical authorities in antiquity. He wrote extensively on a wide range of subjects, such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, therapeutics, embryology, gynaecology, sexuality, dietetics, hygiene, foods, drugs, poisons, wines, herbs, vegetables, olive oil, mineralogy, meteorology, etc. In his writings, he displays strong philosophical influence, and his views present striking connections with the Hippocratic writings, Plato, Aristotle and Theophrastus. The study of Diocles' contribution to the history of medicine and science has long been hampered by the fact that his writings only survive in fragments, and by the absence of a comprehensive and reliable collection of the remaining evidence. This book presents and discusses all the fragments and testimonies to Diocles' views. The first volume presents the Greek, Latin and Arabic sources with facing English translation. The second volume (forthcoming) provides a commentary on the fragments and places them in their intellectual context.
Philip J. van der Eijk (PhD Leiden 1991) is Professor of Greek at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He has published widely on ancient medicine, philosophy, science, comparative literature and patristics. He is the author of *Aristoteles. De insomniis. De divinatione per somnum* (Berlin: Akademie Verlag, 1994), editor of *Ancient Histories of Medicine* (Brill: Leiden, 1999), and co-editor of *Ancient Medicine in its Socio-Cultural Context* (2 Vols., Amsterdam-Atlanta: Rodopi, 1995). |
