A new approach to industrial property emerged, totally breaking with the Ancien Régime system of privileges and royalties. In France, the patent law of 1791 created the property right for the inventors.” The number of
patents then kept increasing, following scientific and technical progress. Numerous patents were thus registered between 1791 and 1844, among which cosmetics-related ones. In June 1857 the registration of trademarks
(property of a name) was added to the registration of invention patents, thus profoundly modifying trade rules.
