Improvement of the quality and safety of products

The first half of the 19th century was marked by an accelerated development of the cosmetics industry. Production and productivity became key words. Over the same time period, a growing interest for the notion of quality
is to be noted. Simultaneously, toxicology, then an emerging subject, contributed to research and to the discovery of the risks linked with the use of certain cosmetic products. Ceruse and vermilion progressively disappeared
from the formulas. The notion of product safety had appeared.
