The control of materials evolved. Pharmacist Ernest Baudrimont published several editions of his Dictionnaire des altérations et falsifications, which constitutes a reference in the field. In physics, specific weights, points of fusion or crystallization, rotatory power, point of ebullition, refraction index, solubility in alcohol were being checked. In chemistry, the saponification coefficient [1] was determined; free acids, methyl index, aldehydes were measured. A new industry, namely that of control and measurement apparatuses, started developing.
