An early ecological awareness

The major progress of chemistry as well as the growing complexity of the compositions of cosmetic and personal hygiene products interested scientists. Thus, as early as 1975, Ms Lucie Coignerai-Devillers, a pharmacist with a passion for biology and bacteriology, explained that using biodegradable products was indispensable to protect the natural ecology of milieus and waters. She urged her colleagues to become aware of the fact that the large volumes of commercialized products exceeded the assimilation capacity of nature. Her work on bacteriology, hygiene and safety rules in factories, and water microbiology was progressively integrated into the fabrication of products.

The use of osmosed water, the development of sterilizing filtration and of decontamination via irradiation or gamma radio sterilization of end products improved the quality and preservation of the products. As a consequence, transportation and development of exportations to the four corners of the earth became easier.
