In 1886 the army pressed to expand Marey and Demenÿ’s
work with the gymnasts from Joinville |

to study the influence of such
additional factors as their height and weight, the
uniform they wore, the weight they carried on their body
and the nature of the ground they traveled. Demenÿ, soon
found himself put in charge of this new set of
experiments which continued until the early 1890s. |
